The main aim of the EXPERTISSUES Network of Excellence on Novel Therapeutic Strategies for Tissue Engineering of Bone and Cartilage Using Second Generation Biomimetic Scaffolds is to combat and overcome fragmentation of European Research on the field of Tissue Engineering of Bone and Cartilage. The network brings together Europe’s leading academic centres and several complementary industrial players in a multi-disciplinary consortium to conduct and structure research that is able to compete in the international arena, namely with USA and Japan.
The objective of creating a long lasting structuring effect of the European research on tissue engineering will in fact converge with the overall goal of the Network, which is to establish a sustainable Virtual European Centre of Excellence in Tissue Engineering of Bone and Cartilage.
The EXPERTISSUES European Institute of Excellence for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Research EEIG is being created as a non-profit association, with its initial head office in University of Minho, Portugal and branches on the legal address of all the member institutions.
The main aims of the EXPERTISSUES European Institute of Excellence for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Research EEIG are:
- To combat and overcome fragmentation of European Research on the field of Tissue Engineering of Bone and Cartilage bringing together Europe’s leading academic centres and several complementary industrial players in a multi-disciplinary Association;
- To provide new tissue engineering technologies for therapeutic treatments, which will ultimately have a major social impact by contributing to the challenge of providing lifelong health for our society at an affordable cost;
- To develop the knowledge and intellectual property required for the future design and manufacture of new products tissue engineering products and of novel therapeutic solutions that will help patients worldwide;
- To design and implement European post-graduation courses in the frame of the EXPERTISSUES EEIG using a credit system (credits can be obtained after several working periods and/or courses at the different labs);
- To establish a Tissue Engineering education and training platform open to researchers from outside the EEIG, in order to create interfaces between the different scientific fields and to be able to train researchers in the state of the art and frontiers of knowledge research in the fields related to Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine;
- To contribute to the objectives of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and European Union with ethical and technical inputs for the development of standards and regulations which promote exploitation of research on biomaterials and tissue engineering;
- To improve gender diversity in European research, restructured in order to take advantage of highly qualified human resources (women and man) by changing working culture (e.g. adopting new models for recruitment and career development, addressing gender diversity);
- To establish a career development strategy for younger scientists providing means to increase their visibility and prestige and by stimulating discussion, sharing views, experience and best practices on measures and policies;
- To provide an expertise research platform highly competitive for call for proposals at European level as well as capable of providing technical services to industry.
